South Central Public Power District
South Central Public Power District About Us

Benefits of Public Power

South Central is a non-profit political subdivision of the State of Nebraska. Because Nebraska is the only state in the nation that is 100 percent public power, electric rates are much lower than the national average.

Local Ownership

Customers control the district which means local control and low-cost electricity for consumers. A board of seven directors is elected during the general election. These directors live in the district and protect the rights of the customers they represent. Because there are no stockholders, South Central is continuously reinvesting in the system.

Community Involvement

South Central is dedicated to programs that encourage economic development, safety programs for schools, Chamber of Commerce and community club membership, and community betterment and promotion projects.

Low Rates

South Central’s rates are among the lowest in the country.

     National average: 9.4¢ per kWh
State of Nebraska average: 7.3¢ per kWh
South Central average: 6.6¢ per kWh

During 2006, South Central PPD’s residential customers paid approximately 10% less than the average for the State of Nebraska for its electricity. This amounted to approximately $300,000 in savings to South Central PPD’s residential customers. With all rate classes considered, the savings exceeded one million dollars for South Central PPD’s customers.

Reliable Service

Reliability of service is important to our customers. We take pride in keeping the lights on for you despite Nebraska’s harsh weather. Over the last five years, we have been able to provide 99.9% service reliability.
